1979

5"x4"

Reflection hologram on glass

Provenance: John Brown Collection

"I had an old inactive hand grenade laying around and got the idea of using it to make a hologram. I silver painted some of it and decorated it with pearls, faux diamonds and gold chain, looking to my eye like a “Fabergé” hand grenade, even more so when lit up by laser light.
I was very pleased with the resulting image plane hologram. It has all the elements that we like about holograms, including the invitation to pull the grenade pin projecting from the surface of the plate. The real bonus is how the reflective surfaces spring to life. Especially the dance of specular reflections off the diamonds creating the quality of the immediate moment.
The title is self-evident."

Background info

"This is my first image plane hologram.
It was made at Holografix Studio, Emeryville CA in 1979
8x10 Agfa master- Agfa transfer.

Fred Unterseher taught me holography. He was a friend and profound influence.
Sand table time was exchanged for me teaching classes at his Holografix studio.

Spread the Wealth is not a limited edition hologram.
Gary Zellerbach sold many at his Holos Gallery in San Francisco as did John Brown in the UK."

An Invitation

The Jonathan Ross Hologram Collection website has been running for fifteen years so we decided it was time for a new look.

The new format has scope for lots more material so I would like to invite all the holographers whose work is featured here to submit background information, stories and images to supplement those I have provided. That way we can work together to make this the best resource on holographic imaging to be found on the web.

About the Collection

The Jonathan Ross Hologram Collection, based in London, UK, is one of the largest resources in the world for creative, display and commercial holography.

A number of touring exhibitions, containing work from the collection, have been presented in outstanding museums and galleries both within the UK and abroad. Information about new acquisitions and exhibitions is added here on a regular basis.
